Kanafeh

Prep. Time: 20 min - Cook Time: 15 min - Total Time: 35 min - Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Kanafeh:  

  • 150 gm Kanafeh dough (kataifi), shredded

  • 150 gm cheese (akawi/Dil peyniri/mozarella), sliced

  • 100 gm unsalted butter, melted

  • 1/3 cup pistachios, crushed

Syrup:  

  • 1 cup white sugar

  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  1. Preheat an oven to 200 degrees C.

  2. Put the sugar and water in a medium pot. Place over medium-high heat and bring to a boil until the sugar completely dissolves. Set aside ant let it cool.

  3. Combine the melted butter with the kanafeh dough.

  4. Grease a round cake pan with a pinch of butter.

  5. Spread half the dough in the pan and press firmly into the pan.

  6. Spread the cheese slices over top of the dough leaving 1cm space around the edges.

  7. Cover the cheese with the other half the dough and press firmly with a glass into the pan.

  8. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes until brown.

  9. Add the cooled syrup over the top of the kanafeh.

  10. Top with the pistachios.
